Paarl 3 Best Wine Hotels

There is a lovely sense of history at Vendome Wine Estate. The Le Roux family has been growing grapes on this Paarl property for generations, and today the working wine and fruit farm surrounds a beautifully renovated manor house dating from 1898. It feels elegant without losing the character of an old Cape wine estate. The manor has only a handful of rooms, a garden pool and plenty of space to slow down... Best of all, the estate’s own wines are very much part of the stay, and the nearby Salmon & Brine restaurant pairs them with seafood, sushi and Japanese-inspired dishes. A glass of local wine beside a 15-metre infinity pool overlooking Paarl Mountain sounds pretty good to us. Tempel Wines is a small wine-estate stay with just a few rooms, each opening onto a private terrace with views towards either the vineyards or mountains. The renovated accommodation still retains its Cape Dutch character, which gives the place much more personality than a conventional guesthouse... Some rooms sit right beside the pool, while another has its own garden facing the vines. This is not a grand resort – and that is exactly the appeal. Waking up surrounded by Shiraz vines and the Drakenstein Mountains is a pretty convincing introduction to the Cape Winelands. Cana Vineyard Guesthouse sits right on a working wine farm outside Paarl, with the manor house tucked among vineyards in the Berg River Valley. Breakfast can be served outside overlooking the mountains, which is exactly where we’d want to start the day... Guests are encouraged to wander through the vines, explore the orchards, picnic beside the dam or simply enjoy the views from the property. The rooms are spacious and several have terraces facing the surrounding countryside. For us, Cana feels less like a polished wine resort and more like actually staying on a South African farm – and that is a big part of its charm. Read more
