Waking up surrounded by Shiraz vines and the Drakenstein Mountains is a pretty convincing introduction to the Cape Winelands. Cana Vineyard Guesthouse sits right on a working wine farm outside Paarl, with the manor house tucked among vineyards in the Berg River Valley. Breakfast can be served outside overlooking the mountains, which is exactly where we’d want to start the day.

Guests are encouraged to wander through the vines, explore the orchards, picnic beside the dam or simply enjoy the views from the property. The rooms are spacious and several have terraces facing the surrounding countryside. For us, Cana feels less like a polished wine resort and more like actually staying on a South African farm – and that is a big part of its charm.
