What stayed with us the most at
Château de Besseuil was the sense that Burgundy was doing exactly what Burgundy does best: old stone, serious Chardonnay country, and no need to show off. The château sits in Clessé, right in the heart of the famous Viré-Clessé appellation. A fun fact is that this corner of the Mâconnais is often described as part of the cradle of Chardonnay, so you are not just sleeping near vineyards - you are staying in one of the grape’s spiritual homes.
The hotel itself is more varied than we expected, with 14 rooms and 6 apartments split between the main château and its outbuildings. Some spaces lean traditional, others much more contemporary, and many look out over the vines or courtyard. Add a gastronomic restaurant, wine tastings, cellar visits and easy access to places like Cluny, Tournus and Roche de Solutré, and this becomes a very convincing base for a Southern Burgundy escape.
