Welcome to one of the most atmospheric winery stays in Chianti.
Badia a Coltibuono Wine Resort is set inside an abbey founded in 1051, surrounded by vineyards, centuries of history and 800 hectares of woodland. That scale changes the whole experience: you can hike, trek, mountain bike or e-bike without ever leaving the estate, and the setting feels far more expansive than a typical Tuscan wine hotel.
What makes it especially memorable is how much is built into the property itself. There are guided visits through the abbey and the thousand-year-old wine cellar, tastings that can include historic vintages, and cooking classes rooted in the legacy of Lorenza de’ Medici, still carried forward today in the historic family kitchen.
Additional highlights include the magnificent Italian garden, the pools (both indoor and outdoor), and those cooler summer evenings that come with being 650 metres above sea level. Add Cetamura in the woods - an archaeological site on the estate linked to the earliest history of viticulture in Chianti - and the whole place starts to feel less like a hotel, more like its own world.
