Otago, New Zealand is one of the southernmost (and most dramatic) wine destinations on the planet. Here, vineyards cascade over rocky hills, framed by rivers and mountains, and the Pinot Noir is nothing short of electric. The same applies to the range of fantastic winery accommodations in the area. Many of them are set right on working estates, offering cellar tours, tastings where the wine is made, and the chance to learn the stories behind the bottle.
We’ve hand-picked and reviewed some unforgettable vineyard stays, from amazing lodges and cozy cottages to heritage-style retreats - all deeply rooted in Otago’s terroir. Whether you want minimalist design, spa indulgence, or country charm, we’ve narrowed the field so you don't have to search endlessly for the perfect place to stay. Cheers!

What makes the Otago wine region so unique? Is it the dramatic landscape, cool climate, and the purity of its Pinot Noir-wines? We definitely think so. Shaped by altitude, long sunlight hours, and crisp air they produce some of the world's best wines. And the fantastic Chinamans Ridge on Chinamans Terrace offers a front-row seat to all of it... Set just outside Bannockburn, this architecturally striking villa is perched above the vineyards with sweeping views over the Kawarau River and surrounding ranges. It’s self-contained, so you can cook, open a bottle from a nearby cellar door, and watch the light shift across the valley in peace. For those wanting to explore the region’s wineries, walking trails, and historic gold-mining relics, it’s perfectly placed - but just staying put is equally tempting... When we stayed at the Cottages at Kinross, it didn’t feel like checking into a hotel - it was like being welcomed into the heart of Central Otago wine country. The setting is absolutely gorgeous, surrounded by vines and mountains, and there’s this easy, down-to-earth vibe that makes you instantly relax. Our cottage was cozy and private, with everything we needed, but the real joy was stepping outside... Just a few steps away we could taste wines from five boutique Otago producers at the Kinross cellar door - each one telling a different story of the region. Afternoons melted into evenings with shared platters, local Pinot Noir in hand, and sunsets over the hills. We left already talking about when we’d come back.
