Set in the Umbrian hills just outside Orvieto,
Agriturismo Tenuta Lapone is exactly the sort of winery hotel we search for. The estate sits about 10 km from town and leans into all the pleasures people actually want from a rural wine escape: wide views, a pool, old fireplaces, quiet gardens and enough space to slow down properly. It is less glossy wine-resort, more relaxed hilltop retreat with a strong sense of place.
What gives it extra charm is the setup. Tenuta Lapone offers both rooms and self-catering-style accommodation, with features like kitchenettes, terraces and independent entrances in some units, which makes the stay feel a little more personal and flexible than a standard hotel. Guests also have a tennis court, a bowling green and easy access to the surrounding countryside.
A detail we like is the location in relation to Orvieto itself. You can spend the day among Etruscan history, cathedral façades and Umbrian trattorias, then head back to the hills for a slower evening with a bottle and a view. That balance is very much the point here: part rural hideaway, part base for exploring one of Umbria’s most atmospheric towns.
