There are wine hotels, and then there are places with more than five centuries of the same family making wine. At Castello di Fonterutoli Wine Resort, the Mazzei family has been producing wine since 1435, and guests stay in rooms and suites scattered through the tiny historic hamlet of Fonterutoli.

The winery is one of the best-known names in Chianti Classico, and tastings, cellar tours and the Osteria di Fonterutoli make it easy to turn the whole stay into a wine experience. For us, this is one of the most exciting places on the list – historic, atmospheric and very serious about its wine without feeling like a museum.
